Those of us who cut out fitness teeth on aerobics and Jazzercise classes are always looking for the next big thing in group fitness. Turns out for many it is Zumba, a high-energy workout that combines Latin and other music including Afircan, Arabic and Hindu, with interval training and resistance using a combination of slow and fast rhythms to tone and sculpt the body. It’s kind of like a Latin dance class mixed with a cardio aerobics workout and some more traditional mat moves like crunches and bicycles. Zumba claims its classes are so much fun they’ll take your mind off your worries. I don’t know about that, but it is a lively, calorie-burning workout with just enough choreography involved to keep us dance junkies interested. One must be a certified Zumba instructor to teach it, so look for classes coming to a gym or dance studio near you soon.
