Ashley Wheater, a former member of the company, has been named the new artistic director of the Joffrey Ballet. Until recently, he was the ballet master at San Fransisco Ballet under the direction of another Joffrey alumnus, Helgi Tomasson.
Wheater started his training in England at the Royal Ballet School (which is different than RAD) and then moved on to start his ballet career at the Royal Ballet and the London Festival Ballet. He then moved on to dance with the Australian Ballet for three years then joining the Joffrey in 1985. He became a part of the San Fransisco Ballet in 1989 on tenure as a soloist until 1996 when he suffered a neck injury and after recovery returned to SF Ballet as the ballet master.
His first season as the artistic director of Joffrey will most likely start in 2008-2009.
