Is ice better than heat for muscle strain with suspected ligament sprain?

I did the splits several times after a good warm-up, then it was part of a dance piece and when I did the splits in the dance piece I felt a popping as I went into the full splits and now I feel a moderate pain at the ischial tuberosity (medial side) and abduction of the leg is the most painful. Does this sound just like a mild muscle strain or could it be that I damaged the ligament as well. It has been about 2 days since the injury and I have tried arnica. What else might I try to speed up full recovery?
