Why cant I breathe through my nose when I go to bed unless i am conscience of it. Why do I breathe from my mouth at night?

Why cant I breathe though my nose unless I am conscience  and do breathe through my nose?  I do not breathe though my nose when I seep at night, and I wake up with a  dry mouth and have to drink alot to get it moist like it is suppose to be.  Can anyone help with this.  I have COPD, my doctor is unsure about emphysema.  Thank you
