what causes bronchogenic carbinoma lung cancer

my dad died from this type of cancer, just a month ago. but he had been working in a gravel pit 2 years prier to his death. he had a wreck in march of 07. thats when they decovered the dime size mass in his lungs. i would like to know what causes this type of cancer.
