Sept 14 2010 Living on the edge with COPD-what edg

Posted Sep 15 2010 2:09pm

Living on the edge with COPD… the edge of WHAT?  Life – plain old life.

COPD has similar problems to those who have cancer, lost limbs, disfiguring accidents, all other severe handicaps and terrible diseases, too many to name.

We are all on the edge of wonder and worry of what is the next challenge of the day-week-month-year.

Sometimes a “dip in depression”   is triggered by something as simple as the weather which affects patients differently, worry it might be an exacerbation, or another day it might be a relative or friend who just cannot grasp that you have problems, that risking exposure to germs can be a very real threat and fear to us, but they take it as if we are personally rejecting them.

Then sometimes it is an inanimate object – such as the computer not working properly,

or the sun hits your furniture just right and shows up the dust…oops you really need to do some work.  Some one looking at you funny – or NOT looking at you is enough to topple the straws like in the old game of ‘pick up sticks’,  Just one too many discomforts and you feel like you will fall apart… all because in the back of ones mind is that fear of being different, how long do we have, and how well will we live with what we have.  We CAN do it, but it does take “a bit” of grit and determination.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

There is your choice!  Do something, Find help,  or  do nothing.  Doing nothing is to give up and go down the slippery slope to – well,
I don’t even want to think about going there.

Doing something, now that is good, but it is often very difficult. So? - Life is difficult for almost everyone, in different ways.

I choose to take my challenge and do my very best trying to hold on or do better.  But as I said these dips happen, it is part of the normal roller coaster road with COPD and life.  Sometimes you need professional help and medications - I did in the beginning, now I exercise instead.

Yesterday I did an extra good walk, attended a patient’s meeting,

(  http://www.colosrc.org/ptsupport.html good links here at CSRC), then I distributed fliers around to senior residences, and the library for the up coming

Thomas L Petty Moving Mountains Conference .  and also gave out fliers for
 his book (Don't miss out
."Adventures of an Oxyfile2" is available at
www.drtompetty.org )

Now that busy productive day made me decide to reward myself with dinner out.  Oh, yes, I have to admit, I was too tired to cook–. Be kind to yourself, just not so kind as to gain a lot of weight…keep moving!

Oh, one more sharing…consider ordering the Everything Respiratory magazine http://www.ermag.org/ for patient stories and other helpful information.

And do check out the new NHOPA (National Home Oxygen Patient Association) website    http://www.homeoxygen.org/ – their newsletter will be coming out soon.
