Motability and DLA…

Posted Mar 26 2010 12:00am

A question from my search-engine slush pile – “Will I lose DLA if I get a Motability car?”.

Since having the higher rate of the DLA mobility component is a pre-requisite for getting a Motability car, then no.

If, however, what is actually meant is will having a Motability car prevent my losing DLA in the future, the answer , unfortunately, is still no. And, of course, you’ll lose the car too.

However, you must have been granted higher rate mobility DLA for a minimum of 3 years (that is, at least 3 years from the date your Motability contract starts), to qualify for Motability. If, though, during the course of your Motability contract, you reapply for DLA in the hope of getting the care component, then your eligibility for the DLA you already have will also be reviewed, and you could lose it. As you can see from some of the comments on this blog, it happens.

So as long as you have the higher rate of mobility for at least 3 years, and don’t rock the boat by reapplying, you should be fine.
