We all know how important exercise is, but we also know how difficult it can be for those of us with COPD whether it be Emphysema or Chronic Bronchitis. However, exercising can make our bodies so much stronger which allow our lungs to work a little more efficiently. I, personally, have felt some relief from my emphysema symptoms when I exercise. I try to get on the treadmill for about 30 minutes every day. Speed is not important so you don't need to go to the extreme. Endurance is what matters for us COPD'ers.
The National Institute on Health and Aging has an informative exercise and physical activity guide that you might find beneficial. The publication can be ordered online for free, however they are currently out of stock. Don't worry though, they anticipate having copies for mailing again at the end of September, so bookmark the site and order your free copy at that time. The guide is 124 pages and has quite a bit of information so it's worth requesting a copy. Even though they are out of publication copies, you can still access the full guide online by clicking here. As always, check with your doctor first before starting any exercise program.
