More than 15% of patients with COPD developed postoperative pneumonia, as compared with just 3.6% of those without the respiratory condition, according to the results of a retrospective chart review published this month.
Investigators also found that patients who developed postoperative pneumonia had significantly worse long-term survival than those who did not. Survival at 5 years was 47.2% in those who developed postoperative pneumonia, as compared to 67.3% in those without the illness.
