IT IS POSSIBLE ! for patient's with COPD to rehabilitate gradually over time and should they CHOOSE to do so, a goal of a Half Marathon, even a Full marathon is not impossible. You do need to work up to that kind of endurance over a period of years...and of course not have physically limiting health issues, but, it is Possible . YOU don't have to set that goal, a nice brisk half hour walk each day is great... but, the long long walk IS possible . Mike and I do about 3 per year. He has done 2 full marathons-every bit of 26.2 miles, and I stick with the 13.1 shorter walk. His lungs are worse than mine, in the almost severe category. So, have HOPE that you too can improve in time, with persistence and dedication to moving up to a goal of your own choosing.

roxlyngcd@comcast.net my exercise today...4.5 miles for 85 minutes. I have committed to walking a minimum of 3 miles or an hour a day to get ready for my next long walk. That will be on October 19th. Now, I said it, I really have to follow through and keep moving. This is perceived as moderate to hard after 5 years of walking and walking, especially when it is 80+ degrees. I know for some 5 feet or minutes would feel the same...keep moving, you can and will improve.

New Reasons To Avoid Grapefruit And Other Juices When Taking Certain Drugs ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2008) Scientists and consumers have known for years that grapefruit juice can increase the absorption of certain drugs with the potential for turning normal doses into toxic overdoses. Now, the researcher who first identified this interaction is reporting new evidence that grapefruit and other common fruit juices, including orange and apple, can do the opposite effect by substantially decreasing the absorption of other drugs, potentially wiping out their beneficial effects http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/08/080819160050.htm

Oxygen on the Go! by........ Rick Carter, PhD, MBA; James S. Williams, PhD; and Brian Tiep, MD ................. Smaller, lightweight oxygen devices give patients new freedom. This is a long technical, but excellent article . "While a primary indication for supplemental oxygen is to correct hypoxemia, other considerations are focused on reducing functional disability, improving quality of life, enhancing mobility, and ensuring that oxygen is provided continually 24 hours per day, as prescribed. The NOTT and MRC trials have collectively documented the positive effects of continuous supplemental oxygen administration, eg, improved survival. 2,3 New and emerging data suggest that supplemental oxygen may be reparative for lung tissue and other associated vascular processes. 4,5 Thus, technologies that make supplemental oxygen easier to use, more efficient, and more reliable are highly desirable and will enable ease of ambulation and prevent tissue hypoxia throughout the day." http://www.rtmagazine.com/issues/articles/2008-07_01.asp

The Art of Diffusion Capacity..... by James A. Harvey, MS, RPFT Determining diffusion capacity is one of the most complex procedures in the PFT laboratory and takes both technical skill and artistry to do it correctly. This diffusion into and out of the alveoli takes place rapidly, and its efficiency depends upon the integrity of the alveolar capillary membrane, as well as upon the rate of blood flow through the capillaries, in addition to the concentration of Hb in the blood and the barometric pressure (Pb). Diseases that reduce Dlco include lung resection, emphysema, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary edema, pulmonary vasculitis, and hypertension. Diseases that increase Dlco include polycythemia, left-to-left shunting, pulmonary hemorrhage, and asthma http://www.rtmagazine.com/issues/articles/2008-08_02.asp
