Your Questions About Magnesium Chelate

David asks…

I realize diet would be best, and that among supplements magnesium oxide isn’t absorbed easily and is irritating to the digestive tract. Magnesium citrate may be better, as well as chelated magnesium. What about magnesium chloride? Which is best and most cost-effective? It is possible to get a several lbs of magnesium fertilizer salt in bulk(like citrate) for cheap and consume it as a supplement, would this be safe?

Magnesium chelated to an amino acid (such as magnesium glycinate) are generally the best absorbed and tolerated, however best taken in balance with calcium. Magnesium citrate and chloride often lead to GI disturbance such as diarrhea. I would NOT suggest ingesting a magnesium salt based fertilizer under any circumstances. Usually magnesium supplements are pretty cost effective and you should be able to find good supplements at your local health food store or naturopathic doctor.

PhysioLogics is an excellent brand with a good magnesium chelate product. This line of supplements is only sold through licensed healthcare practitioners, but my readers can use my Professional ID and buy factory direct, with my discount and free shipping.  Details on discounted PhysioLogics are here: http://www.pondernaturalhealth.com/physiologics-vitamins-supplements/

Mark asks…

does magnesium from foods absorb just as good as chelated magnesium. which one is better absorbed or are they equal.

Normally, with a good diet, the magnesium you will get from your food is enough. But in case of magnesium deficiency, both food and dietary supplements are needed. There is research indicating that the chelated forms of magnesium (like magnesium citrate) are better absorbed. “Chelated” means connected with another molecule. In the case of magnesium, the most common chelates fall into the category of amino acid chelates. In these supplements, magnesium is attached to an amino acid. The most widely-available amino acid chelates are magnesium glycinate, magnesium aspartate, and magnesium taurate.
