It is a very natural process to “pass gas” or “break wind” or “fart”. Yet we are all embarrassed when we fart in public. There is something you can do about it once you know why people fart.
What is a Fart?
A fart or flatulence is air that was produced during digestion in the intestine which is expelled through the rectum. As unprocessed food passes through the intestine the bacteria in the large intestine and colon begin to work to digest it causing gases to form.
During this part of the digestive process, these gases build up the pressure causes the gas to be pushed from the rectum thus causing a “fart”. The odor of a “fart” is due to hydrogen sulfide gas which is produced in the bacteria in the intestine.
What Causes People to “Fart”?
There are many things that can contribute to flatulence. Digestive disorders which cause your food to pass into the large intestine undigested can cause gas to build up. Lactose intolerance can lead to undigested enzymes and causes people to “fart”.
Overgrowth of yeast or Candida in the bowels is the major cause of excessive flatulence. Too much yeast in the bowel can cause gas buildup, bloating and farting. Candida is caused by a poor diet especially a diet high in sugar, by a dysfunction of the immune system or not completing prescription antibiotics. When you do not take the complete dose of antibiotics you have killed off the good bacteria in your system and made the perfect breeding ground for yeast.
What Can People that Fart Excessively Do to Stop
There are some foods that are known to cause excessive gas in the body. These are dairy products, corn, soy and wheat. Limiting or eliminating these foods in your diet can help reduce the gas you produce. Perhaps a change in diet can help reduce your flatulence.
Chew your food well and do not drink fluids with your meals. Liquids dilute the digestive enzymes in the stomach which allows food to pass undigested into the intestine where gas is formed. When you eat fast or talk when you are eating you are introducing air into your stomach.
Speak to your doctor to make sure there is not a medical reason for your excessive gas. There are over the counter medications to take to prevent or limit the formation of gas which causes people to “fart”. Ask your doctor if these medications might be helpful for you.
