Flaxseed oil is scientifically proven to give benefits in health and continues to be studied for its nutritional and dietary benefits.  There has been little in the way of evidence of side effects associated with its use and it is thought to be a safe and beneficial health food supplement.

Flaxseed oil which is also known as linseed oil is derived from the seeds of the flax plant.  Flaxseed oil is a great source of antioxidants.  It is used by many people as a daily supplement to get much needed Omega-3 fatty acids to maintain health.

Flaxseed oil is extracted from the Flax plant which is common in areas of China and western Canada.  It is a common additive of many health foods and has a nutty rich texture.

Due to multiple studies of Flaxseed oil and the discovery of its nutrients and health benefits the popularity of its use in health foods and as a supplement has risen greatly.

Flaxseed oil is recommended for people who are at risk of heart disease and who have high cholesterol because it is high in Omega-3 fatty acids which have been proven to reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.  The fatty acid ALA or alpha-linolenic acid which is contained in flaxseed oil may help to prevent inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, heart and artery disease. It also has the chemical called Lignans, an antioxidant which has been linked to the possible prevention of cancer.

Flaxseed Oil and its Health Benefits for the Skin and Scalp

Flaxseed oil is helpful for treating the skin and scalp.  It can be used to aid in reducing the appearance of scars and in healing skin abrasions.   If you diet lacks in Omega-3 fatty acid and you add a supplement of flaxseed oil this may help to reduce acne, eczema and other skin issues.  Flaxseed oil encourages hair growth and is known to moisturize the scalp and help it to hold the moisture reducing the harmful effects such as dry, damaged hair and dandruff.

Flaxseed, unlike most oils needs to be refrigerated because it can become rancid.  If this happens it can be dangerous to ingest it.  Be aware that the shelf life of flaxseed oil is only a few weeks and then it must be discarded.  Do not try to stockpile this oil; only purchase what you can use in a few weeks time to avoid these problems.
