Use Your Mind, Lose Those Pounds

Posted Sep 30 2008 7:42am

You hardly realize it when you’re packing on the pounds – a few months of eating all you want and leading the life of a couch potato and what do you know, the buttons on your jeans no longer meet each other and you’ve moved up a notch in the size department. But when you’re trying to lose the extra weight you’re carrying, you tend to be aware of every single minute of the day – because you’re either craving fatty foods so badly or your muscles are screaming in pain with the arduous exercise routine you’ve set yourself.

The weight loss route is one that’s taken by many and stayed on by just a fraction of those who start out. There are various reasons why someone who wants to shed those excess pounds does a sudden volte face and stops short of reaching their goal, with the lack of motivation, the tendency to succumb to temptation, the inability to cope with the arduous task they’ve set for themselves being some of the main ones.

But some the more intrepid souls who have been down that road and found the going tough are turning to new avenues to help them stay the course – hypnosis. And it seems to be working wonders! It’s a form of therapy where your hypnotist drills into your subconscious the one thing you really want to do, and then you find yourself just going along for the ride.

Let me get one thing straight though - Hypnosis by itself is not a weight loss technique; it only augments your will power and boosts your motivation to stick to either the diet you’ve chosen or the fitness regimen you’ve set for yourself or both. But before you run to the nearing hypnosis clinic and plop yourself on that comfy couch, you must know that not all people are hypnotizable – only those who are submissive and actually believe in the method are open to the suggestions of the hypnotist. A study conducted by the Stanford University found that only 15 percent of the population of the USA is hypnotizable while 10 percent cannot be hypnotized at all. So what works for the goose may not work for the gander!

If you’re thinking of trying your hand at hypnosis as a weight loss aid, choose a clinical psychologist or someone with clinical credentials to assist you in your efforts. Remember though that hypnosis helps you in all aspects of life by making you learn positive behaviors which, after a period of time, get incorporated into your behavioral pattern and become a part of who you are.
