Trail Blazing For a Cardio Workout

Posted Nov 27 2008 10:21am

cardio workout Cardio is definitely easier if you have a partner to motivate you.  My husband and I combine our geocaching and our walking to get that cardio workout in.

This past weekend we were out in the field again.  My love of walking off trail gets us off trail.  My husband’s search for the “easy” way takes us off trail.  And that’s where we were this weekend, searching for a couple elusive geocaches.

For those not familiar with geocaching, it is a high tech treasure hunt, using posted coordinates and a GPS unit.  The fun is in the find.  The find can just be the act of signing a log.  It can be the exchange of small trinkets.  For me, it’s the discovery of new parks and places that I would never have found before.

Our Saturday adventure took us to three geocaches, walking three miles, over the course of two hours.  My husband’s read of the topo map took us to areas only known to deer and escaped convicts, the real woods.

Hikers know this, but trying to negotiate hills and obstacles of all sorts makes it a more intense workout.  Well developed core muscles help with balance.  Add to the mix a light dusting of snow over frozen ground and you have a killer workout.

Despite the fact that my quads objected to the trek, at least we got out–both of us–and enjoyed a good walk.  What activities do you and your significant other share in? Photo by shadowgate
