Top 10 Weight Loss Myths

Posted Feb 24 2010 12:08am

Losing weight can be difficult. It gets even harder when you receive a great deal of misinformation, such as the top 10 weight loss myths that we are all becoming familiar with. You need to find out what these myths are, so that you can avoid them, and then you need to ask your doctor to tell you the truth concerning weight loss.

Totally False Weight Loss Myths

Myth #10 – You must eat less to lose weight. The fact is that you probably need to eat more, or at least eat more often, while consuming fewer calories. Allowing yourself to become hungry when you are trying to lose weight is detrimental to your diet.

Myth #9 – Starvation is the key to success. Starvation puts your body into starvation mode, and then it becomes harder to lose weight, as your body refuses to give up its stores of fat as easily, for fear that you will not feed it again.

Myth #8 – Drink lots of water. Water will help you to retain water, which makes the numbers on the scale go up higher. There is no replacement for solid food, and you only need to drink as much water as your body requires – no more, and no less.

Weight Loss Myths with Some Truth to Them

Myth # 7 – Coffee suppresses the appetite. This is actually true, but again, nothing can replace solid food in your body. Never use coffee as a replacement for healthy food when you are hungry.

Myth # 6 – You must have willpower to lose weight. This is true, to an extent. You actually just need to willpower to eat healthy food – not to avoid food altogether.

Myth #5 – Always choose a salad. It is true that salads are healthy and usually low calorie unless you start piling on the bacon bits and salad dressing. Eat a salad, but then eat a small meal that includes protein as well.

Myth #4 – Don’t weigh on the scale. You shouldn’t weigh excessively, but it’s hard to stay encouraged if you can’t see that you are making progress. Weigh once a week to see how you are doing, and remember that any loss of weight is still a loss, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

Myth #3 – You need exercise equipment or a gym to lose weight. You do need exercise, but you don’t need expensive equipment, or a gym. A brisk walk each day will help you to lose weight.

Weight Loss Myths Regarding Diet Supplements

Myth #2 – Diet supplements will help you to lose weight faster. This isn’t true. In fact, many diet supplements are unhealthy, and you should never use them without consent from your doctor.

Myth #1 – You should use meal replacement shakes to lose weight. Meal replacement shakes are okay, to an extent, but you shouldn’t be consuming more of these than you do of actual solid food by any means.
