As of last Friday, no more can you enjoy that Big Mac, fries, and coke in ignorance of the thousand plus calories you’re ingesting. Now you know. Fast-food restaurants and casual dining establishments in New York City are now required by law to post calorie counts. Good thing? Yes, I think it is.
I believe in free choice. If someone is going to make a healthy lifestyle choice whether it be to eat donuts or smoke cigarettes that is their choice. I believe as well though that to make good decisions, you need information. Friday’s rule in the city does just that.
What impact will it have? Maybe not much, but it will increase awareness. There will always be those that will eat the Aussie cheese fries no matter what. It’s their choice. There are those that may be dismayed to learn the actual calorie counts of that taco salad loaded with beef and sour cream. They may make some positive changes.
I don’t eat fast-food anymore. Haven’t for years. I banished fast food from my lifestyle when I learned the calorie counts. Maybe this ruling will help someone else to the road to wellness.
