If you are able to make changes in your diet that will allow you to avoid heartburn this is the best way.  Eliminating some liquids such as carbonated beverages and caffeinated beverages may help eliminate your heartburn.  Other foods that might be causing you heart burn include products high in fat such as milk products or citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and grapefruit.  Tomato based products are very acidic; consider limiting the amounts of pizza, spaghetti and sauces in your diet.  Another type of food you may want to take out of your diet or limit is chocolate in any form.

Natural Remedies to Stop Heartburn in its Tracks

If your heartburn can be treated using natural remedies it is highly recommended that you use those methods.  Treating heartburn naturally can help you avoid causing your condition to become worse.  Some medications may complicate heartburn or interfere with other medications you are taking.

  • Baking soda has been effective in the treatment of heartburn.  If your diet restricts the amount of salt you can consume you should check with your doctor before using this method.  To use this remedy simply mix about ½ teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water (6-8 ounces).  Water is the recommend liquid because it does not dilute the effects of the baking soda.
  • Apple cider vinegar can also be used.  Mix it just like you would mix the baking soda; ½ teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 6 or 8 ounces of water. The effects can usually be noticed within a half an hour.
  • Honey creates a soothing effect in the throat and digestive tract.  Pure honey is the type of honey you will need to treat heartburn.

There are some changes you can make in your own life to help reduce your incidence of heartburn.  Increased stress leads to increased acid in the stomach.  Take steps to reduce the amount of stress you have or learn new coping skills to help you better deal with stress that you cannot completely eliminate.

Smoking causes increased acid production in the stomach increasing heartburn if you are susceptible.  Alcohol is possibly the worst thing you can put in your stomach if you suffer with heartburn.
