Stevia could be taken off the market!

Posted Oct 30 2008 11:51am

A "citizen's petition" aka a private law firm representing an undisclosed client or clients, has petitioned the FDA to classify Stevia as a "drug".

They base this on the fact that Stevia has had clinical research done that shows that it is effective and beneficial in reducing blood pressure and reducing blood sugar levels.

These beneficial effects, they contend, should make it a drug!

How ridiculous is this that a sweetener that has not been shown to have ANY harmful effects is having attempts to be pulled off the market while artificial sweeteners like Nutrasweet and Splenda, which have been shown to possibly cause cancer and have neurotoxic effects, are left ON the market with the classification of GRAS or Generally Regarded as Safe!!

What a mixed up world we live in.
