Skeptical Scientists Baffled By Homeopathy Results

Posted Jun 30 2009 3:46pm 1 Comment

Skeptical scientists were observing a trial with homeopathic histaminum.  The trial was to determine if a diluted histaminum would have any effects on blood cells in the body.  Four trials were done to see if the dilute histaminum would have any effect.  The histaminum was diluted more than Avagardo's number so the assumption is that no way could this medicine have any effect on any blood cells.  Four trials were done to see if this dilute histaminum would affect blood cells.  Also four trials showed an effect on the blood cells.

Scientists concluded that there seems to be an effect with this scientific studies.  However, scientists cautioned that more trials need to be done to reproduce this phonemena.

Scientists say if these results would hold true that the law of physics would need to be rewritten.  They still hold their skepticism but their minds are opening up a little bit more.

Are there are scientific trials that show homeopathy works that are well done?  I know there were some other trials in France that showed homeopathy to work scientifically.  However, these trials were later proved to be false and tainted.

Im not sure what French studies you are referring to but I recommend reading the original study yourself rather than take someone else's word that it's 'disproven'.  The difficulty with doing an 'acceptable' double blind study is that physics paradigms are not the only ones challenged by homeopathy.

The current assumption of 'one cause, one cure' is the problem. Homeopathy clearly says there's no such thing. So to give everyone the same remedy for a similar symptom would be required for a double blind study. Yet if we understand homeopathy properly, we know that clinical symptomatic presentations that appear alike may respond to different remedies in differnet patients.  So the insistance that double blind studies are the only valid ones is at the core of the problem. Homeopathy is based on empiricism, which is also scientific, although many today would not admit that.  In a nutshell it is based on observing what works.

The valuable study to do regarding homeopathy would be to compare patient cases with an officially diagnosed condition, plotting time from treatment to elimination of symptoms, percent improvement (objective and subjective), and overall cost, with 2 groups. One would receive the 'standard of care' for the chosen condition, the other group homeopathic by a skilled practitioner and supportive care.  Thats the study I'd like to see.  To do that you would need to control a large healthcare center or a government that administers health care.  If one was truly interested in low cost, positive outcome health care, they would do this.
