Symptoms of Constipation

The frequency of bowel movements varies from individual to individual.  Some people may have more than one bowel movement each day, while others only one bowel movement every few days.  Regardless of the frequency of your bowel movements, passing dry and hard stool is a sign of constipation. You may find that you are straining to have a bowel movement.

Some people have reported rectal bleeding with constipation due to the passage of hard dry stool.

Causes of Constipation

There are several things that can cause constipation.  Some of these include inadequate hydration, lack of exercise, delaying going to the bathroom when you feel the urge, the use of narcotic pain medications and not getting enough fiber in the diet.

Natural Treatment for Constipation

There are prescription medications to relieve it, but most of the time the side effects can make you feel worse than you did.  Natural treatment for constipation without side effects can be what you are looking for.

Water – The number one thing you can do to help prevent and treat constipation is to increase the amount of water you drink each day.  Increasing the fluid will make stool softer and easier to pass.
Fiber – Increasing the amount of fiber in your diet for natural treatment for constipation is also a key factor. Foods high in fiber which is insoluble passes unchanged into the bowel; this gives bulk and a softer texture to the stool making it easier to pass. Whole grains, fruits and vegetables are good sources of fiber.
Herbs – There are herbs that can provide natural treatment for constipation.  Many of these are used in a tea form and used as stimulant laxatives.  These herbs include Senna, buckthorn, rhubarb, cascara Sagrada and aloe.  While effective, they should not be used longer than a week without consulting your physician.

If you have to take narcotic pain medications for chronic pain you will need to be aware that they can cause constipation.  You must therefore take measures to counteract the constipation effects.  Increase your fluid intake; increase your fiber and exercise. Last but not least, do not put off going to the bathroom when you have the urge to go. When you delay having a bowel movement the intestines begin to absorb water from the stool.  This causes the stool to become more dry and harder to pass when you attempt to have a bowel movement.
