With all the recent negative news about over the counter cough and cold medications for children it was refreshing to see research on natural remedies. For years alternative medicine practitioners have been recommending honey for coughs. Now a team of researchers from Penn State have found that honey is actually more effective than dextromethorphan, the active ingredient found in many children's cough medications.
The researchers used a small amount of buckwheat honey before bedtime. The honey provided better relief by reducing the frequency and severity of nightime coughs. It also helped the children to sleep better.
I know next time my child has a cough I will use honey...
