While researching my book I came across the idea that your body is like a pharmacy. It is capable of manufacturing a wide variety of chemicals that can do just about anything to your physiology. If only we could harness this wonderful healing power. I am a firm believer in the concept of mustering all of your body's resources to heal. This includes using your mind and even some of the more seemingly obscure things like intention and prayer.
So, I was happy to see a recent article about how certain hormones produced in the heart could stop cancer (at least in mice).
In one of my classes I teach about how the hormone Atrial Natriuretic Hormone (ANH) works to control blood pressure. This hormone is produced in the heart and secreted in response to an increase in blood volume. Let's say that a larger than normal volume of blood enters the heart at the right atrium. The heart responds by secreting ANH which in turn causes the kidneys to excrete sodium. In physiology sodium and water usually go together so when your body gets rid of sodium, water follows. This reduces your blood volume and consequently your blood pressure.
Professor James A. Haley working at Veterans Hospital in Tampa discovered three additional hormones produced by the same gene that produces ANH. These were kaliuretic hormone that causes potassium excretion, a long acting natriuretic hormone that causes sodium excretion and a vessel (vaso) dilator that opens up the blood vessels.
What the good professor did was to take these hormones and administer them to cancerous cell cultures from mice. These included breast, prostate, colon, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. What he found was that the hormones killed up to 97% of all of the cancerous cells.
Next he induced cancers in mice and treated their tumors with the hormones. He found that the treatments eliminated the cancer in 80% of the mice with pancreatic cancer and 66% of the mice with breast cancer. The tumors in the mice that were not cured shrank to 10% of their size. Not bad!
None of the mice died of cancer and there were no side effects.
The next step is to replicate the results in humans.
This could mean that future treatments for cancer may consist of chemicals right out of your own body.
