Recent research from Current Hypertension Reports supports the practice of Transcendental meditation (TM) for lowering blood pressure.
Researchers examined a number of high quality studies and compared TM with other stress management techniques like biofeedback and stress management. It turns out that the practice of TM produced a statistically significant effect of lowering blood pressure 5 points on systolic and 2.8 points on diastolic. Meditators also experienced lower risk factors for cardiovascular disease and lower mortality rates.
It appears that the changes resulting from TM are comparable to those associated with diet and exercise.
Overall the study lends support for mind-body healing and the practice of TM for the treatment of hypertension.
