Posted Mar 31 2010 10:54pm

If you’ve been to the store lately to purchase any type of lotion, you may have noticed that the price of those lotions is steadily rising, and this is true regardless of the quality of the lotion that you are purchasing. There was a time when people made their own hygiene products, including lotions, and you will find that by reverting to these old ways, you will save a ton of money. All you need to know is information that teaches you about making coconut lotion for yourself.

Making Coconut Lotion for a Variety of Conditions

There are many things that coconut lotion can help with. These conditions include dry, itchy skin, eczema, wrinkles, and more. Most lotions contain some type of oil and water, which is absorbed by the skin. The health benefits and beauty benefits of the lotion are dependent on the type of oil used. Unfortunately, those benefits are temporary at best and only last as long as it takes the oil and water to run through your system. This creates the need for additional lotion, and as we know, this can get very costly.

Making Coconut Lotion Starts with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is made by grating the inside of the coconut and mixing it with water. This is done by squeezing the coconut with the water more than actual stirring. This creates coconut milk. The coconut milk must then be heated and cooked until all of the water has evaporated and only coconut oil remains. It may need to be strained to get out bits of coconut if you want to use the oil for lotion.

Turning Coconut Oil into Coconut Lotion

To make lotion, you must melt beeswax. This is done with a double boiler over medium heat, and the process can take a bit of time. Once the wax is melted, you will need to add the coconut oil. Remove the bottom of the double boiler, and place the pan containing the beeswax and oil directly on the burner, and stir it while it heats. Remove the mixture from the heat.

Next, you need water, and ideally, you will use distilled water. Use a candy thermometer to measure the temperature of the beeswax and coconut oil mixture, and heat your water to this same temperature. Pour the water and the oil mixture into a blender, and blend it on low for a minute or two. To this, you will add aloe vera and an essential oil, and blend all of this for another minute or two. Your coconut lotion is complete, and you only need to bottle it up!
