Each year we take this opportunity to remember the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the contributions to peace that he has made. This day, let us also consider what we can do to increase the peace in our own lives. It can be difficult to be still when there is so much devastation going on in the world around us. It is especially important however during these times to pause and refocus ourselves in order to keep from being overwhelmed by the stressors of life.
Practice clearing your mind and being still for a few moments each day wherever you are, whenever you can. With your eyes opened or closed (depending on your level of comfort) take in a deep breath while slowly counting to five. As you slowly exhale, blow out your fear, anxiety, negativity; anything you need to decrease, in order to increase your peace. Slowly breath in again to a five count and slowly release. Feel your muscles relax and soften and your heart beat less rapidly. Repeat this until you have achieved a sense of calm and peacefulness. Treat yourself to these “peace breaks” throughout your day. With practice you will be amazed at how quickly the peace will come!
