If you truly enjoy fitness classes, you may do well as a fitness instructor. Of course, you cannot become a fitness instructor without the proper training and certifications, and because there are so many different types of certifications, you will have to make some decisions. Here is some information that will teach you how to become a fitness instructor.
What Type of Fitness Instructor Will You Be?
The best way to determine which type or types of fitness you would like to instruct is to take a wide range of fitness classes yourself. Consider yoga classes, aerobics, strength training, spinning, kickboxing, and other types of fitness classes that are available to you. Realize that while you will want to work on training and certification for one type of fitness at a time, you are not limited to just one certification as a fitness instructor.
Learn from Your Fitness Classes
Don’t just follow the instructors lead to work through the exercises. Instead, really pay close attention to how the class is taught, and how the participants in the class respond. What is the instructor doing well? What is he or she doing that isn’t effective? Observing these things is a vital part of your own fitness instructor training, whether you have enrolled in a training program or not.
Work towards Becoming a Fitness Instructor
Start by getting your CPR certification and first aid certification if you feel that you will need this. Such certification is almost always required for fitness instructors. You will need to renew this certification by participating in continuing education or refresher courses every two years.
Next, get your primary certification. This is certification as a fitness instructor, with no specialization. Check with the American Council on Exercise for this certification, or the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. After you have received this certification, you should seek out training for specific types of fitness that you wish to teach, such as yoga, and join the associations for that exercise discipline as well.
Typically, to become a fitness instructor, you will need to have a certain number of hours of instruction, and then take a physical test as well as a written test. Additionally, you need to be aware when all of your certifications expire, and what you need to do to renew those certifications. While you will largely be teaching several participants in one class, you may have an opportunity for personal training as well, and you will need certification as a personal trainer for this purpose.
