Fitness Friday: My New Total Body Workout

Posted Apr 09 2010 8:30am

My new total body workout: an old fashioned push lawn mower!

It requires no gasoline. It cuts like a dream. It adds no emissions to the atmosphere, and once purchased, I need not spend another dime on it.

While I can't cut all three acres of grass with it, I can use it to trim the grass inside the gated vegetable garden. I have a fenced-in, raised bed garden. We left grass pathways in between. Last year, we used a string trimmer to keep the grass trimmed and the garden looked like a mess. Worst of all, many of the really tough weeds couldn't be cut with the string trimmer, so I had some really nasty weeds there.

I asked my husband for an old fashioned push mower for many reasons. It's really inexpensive - and it doesn't use any fuel, which was important to me. But it also gives me quite the workout. While I did forget to wear my pedometer this week while pushing the lawn mower, it took about 20 minutes. And in some spots, it was quite the struggle to push the mower through the tall grass, so I felt like I was giving my arms and back a bit of a workout too.

I just finished reading the book "Clara's Kitchen" by Clara Cucciannari, and she's a fit 94 year old great grandmother who doles out advice along with a heaping helping of recipes. I loved her comment "Scrub your kitchen floor by hand - who needs a gym when they can clean a home?"
Indeed. Who needs a gym when there's kitchens to scrub and lawns to mow?

So here's to my new fitness gear...an old fashioned push mower!
