Does this sound familiar? I am a busy new Mom who is juggling working, blogging, a couple new businesses, and a 10.5 month old. Oh, and a husband, too. So I kind of pushed taking care of myself a little further down on my priority list, and by taking care of myself, I mean specifically, making any effort to look attractive. (See my blog post about the first time I went shopping after giving birth ).
Pre-baby, I had it pretty good. I used to own a wellness spa, and so great estheticians, regular facials, and excellent, effective, and organic skin care products were plentiful. My skin was gleaming and I looked youthful, at least 10 years younger than I really am. Fast forward to post-baby, and, well…holy mackerel, it’s crunch time. Time to take some action, that is.
Luckily, I still have access to high-quality facials through good friends who own spas, but it’s really the home care routine that matters the most. Plus, show me the new Mom who has time to actually get a facial once a month? I know this for a fact, because some of our best and most regular spa clients dropped off the radar for at least 2 years after they had a baby.
What have I been doing for home care? Admittedly, nothing. Diddly. Squat. I’m lucky if I remember to splash some water on my face in the morning, let alone cleanse, exfoliate, masque, moisturize, and apply sunscreen. Which is what you’re SUPPOSED to do. After all these months of doing diddly-squat for my skin, it is looking pretty parched, dry, and worst of all, old.
When I owned the spa, I used to make all kinds of customized Aromatherapy facial oil blends for clients, who swore by them and would order them from me at a faster pace than I could make them. So now I’m thinking, why not make myself one with some of my essential oil knowledge…duh. Now that I don’t have time to masque and moisturize, it’s the perfect time to whip out the arsenal of Mother Nature’s skin care cabinet.
What’s going in my blend? Well, I’m going to use Evening Primrose as a carrier oil, since that is extremely balancing for women. Then I’m going to add 24 drops of essential oils total: 6 drops of Carrot Seed (Daucus carrota) (which contains the precursors to Vitamin A, so it’s extremely anti-aging), 6 drops of Immortelle (Helichrysm angustifolia) (which is extremely cell proliferant and regenerating), 6 drops of German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) (great for sensitive skin, broken capillaries, and anti-inflammation), and 6 drops of Rose (Rosa damascena) (the oil that is probably the most affined to women). And let’s face it, without the Rose, the other 3 oils together may not smell that wonderful.
Tomorrow, I’ll blog about how you can make YOUR own essential oil skin care blends.
