EATS SHOOTS AND LEAVES

Posted Oct 22 2008 4:45pm
POLLINATION - to transfer pollen from the male structure of a plant (such as the anther) to the female structure of a plant (such as the stigma), and fertilize it.

This represents the spirit of those who are searching for their identity through contact with others and that which encompasses the essence of the Gramineae family of remedies – Agropyron repens; Agrostis capillaries; Anantherum; Anthoxanthum odoratum; Arundo mauritanica; Avena sativa; Bambusa; Bromus; Cymbopogon; Cynodon dactylon; Hordeum; Lolium temulentum; Oryza; Phleum pratense; Saccharum officinale; Secale cereale; Stigmata maydis; Triticum; Zea italica.

This group comprises grasses, cereals and reeds. Most have hollow jointed stems with upright growth that can easily be bent over.

Nutrition – most of these in the group can be eaten and have contributed worldwide as beneficial food substances with high mineral, vitamin and carbohydrate content. Some have a connection with sugar and sweetness that strengthens the perception of food and nutrition into nurture – something we associate with childhood but is also needed to sustain procreation, adulthood and old age. Food is all about survival but nurture makes survival special. Sugar is also a preservative that could hold nurture intact.

Digestion and elimination is essential to extract the best from any food and thus there are many symptoms that pertain to the digestive organs from the mouth and jaw down to stomach, liver, kidneys and intestines. This can be visualized easily as that hollow stem of many of these plants – nutrients falling all the way through (see pathology notes below).

If nurture doesn’t accompany nutrition then an over indulgence can result and we see this neediness in this group to the point of addiction to stimulating substances such as alcohol; food and heavy duty drugs. The effects of alcoholism are also seen in the clinical symptom picture in the form of trembling, staggering, tics, brain damage, nausea and vomiting. A lot of alcoholic substances are dependent on fermentation for their strength and this fermentation can also be seen in the digestive ailments. Many of the cereals in this group are used in the making of alcohol.

Another angle on the digestion theme is an inability to digest certain substances and this group of remedies is especially well known for its allergic states, especially Hay Fever and all the common symptoms that are produced. This inability to digest something as vital as food represents, again, that inability to connect with others – the nurture aspect of food.

There is also clinical data available regarding Zea italica (setaria italica) which is one of the millets – that it is a beneficial food component in obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases because millet effects cholesterol metabolism and insulin sensitivity due to adiponectin concentration.

Libido – the sexual energies are high to intense in this group of remedies. Pollination is required for procreation and survival but because what needs to be cured in this group is a lack of appropriate connection and contact with others then these sexual energies become disillusioned. There is lascivious monomania; sexual irregularities (sic); sexual debility; increased modesty; a need to run around naked; gonorrhea and syphilis.

Water – this is crucial and has quite a presence in the various symptom pictures of this group. Water is movement and this is aging which in turn means death. Death is suicide by drowning; a terrible fear of water; a mania for washing; dreams of floods and water disasters; dreams of Noah’s ark; dreams of sinking; water is required for flushing out the digestion; water is a discharge and we see excess secretions in this group as well as the polarity of being ‘plugged up.’

Colours – quite a range including, white, red, blue, violet, green, yellow, gray, waxy and transparent.

Pains – burning, itching, pricking, cramping, stabbing, crushing, numbing, dragging, wave like, neuralgic, sharp, electric like, stitching, pressing and shooting.

Sensations as if – plugged; bells in head; steel arrows alive in gullet; crushed; something alive in abdomen; obstructed/plugged; bells in ears; numb; bubble in navel; foreign body in shoe; a poker; water lapping against internal organs; empty and hollow;
bound in cords.

Emotions – many depend on the struggle to find an identity through contact with others – we can see this from the range of sensations experienced. This struggle is also represented by an invasion or infestation by fungus that many within the Gramineae family are prone to. If you have no identity then you are easily taken over. The upright stature of many of these plants are easily toppled over by weakness and old age (and by being drunk!)

So there is a lot of depression, confusion, lassitude and indifference, a need to be alone coupled with a need for jolly company. A sense of betrayal is felt and the emotions and intellect become separated and the mind cannot fix on anything to the extent that suicidal thoughts occur or a mania that takes a grotesque or lascivious nature.

The main sensation is that of being plugged or obstructed sometimes accompanied by a sensation of some device being alive inside – this is the identity that needs to be honoured and nurtured and allowed to come alive. Joy Lucas RSHom.
