You may have read a story yesterday on the BBC News website regarding a charity warning people away from internet information about natural remedies and their effects on certain conditions. Turns out not all is what it seems.
Sense About Science is an independent charitable trust that has been watching over the internet to find sites that make claims about offering hope to people who are ill through treatments that are seen as non-conventional.
While it is always advisable to consult with a GP and trained alternative medicine practitioner before undertaking any complementary or alternative treatment, the story published yesterday failed to mention an important factor.
Sense About Science, a non-profit organisation, receives donations from a number of drug companies (e.g. AstraZeneca plc) who would not necessarily want natural remedies replacing the conventional medicines that they supply. By limiting access to information and debunking alternative therapies, drug companies look to control healthcare and peddle their own products.
What a shame that the BBC, a respected news organisation, failed to present who makes the financial donations to this charity and focused on isolated cases of contraindications to natural cures. A balanced piece of journalism this was not.
