December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Month. The change in the name is a bit sobering, reflecting how society has changed. The statistics are equally disconcerting. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 36 people die each day in alcohol-related accidents.
The problem is not just young male drivers. Nearly half of the deaths associated with motorcycle accidents involving alcohol were motorcyclists, aged 40 to 44. Clearly, education and increased enforcement are key.
While some may argue that a 0.08% alcohol level is too strident, the fact remains that this concentration is valid. However, more must be done. How often are we reading of individuals arrested for multiple DUI/DWI offenses? This is definitely a shortcoming of our legal systems if repeat offenders are continually allowed back on the streets.
It’s a wonderful thing about our country that we have choices. We can choose to drive or not drive under the influence. If the latter is the choice, law enforcement and “zero tolerance” laws for all ages is necessary.
