Chinese herbs for Travelling

Posted May 06 2011 9:09am

It first occurred to me how helpful herbs are on vacation when my wife and I went to Peru for our Honeymoon.  We were both still in graduate school and this was our first big adventure together.

As an acupuncture graduate student, I was trying to predict what the health issues were going to be in Peru.  I knew that Herbs are natural remedies that can help the most common issues on adventures: digestive complaints, getting colds on the airplane, itching from insect bites, and even altitude sickness.

So I went out to focus my research for this trip and its possible hazards.

First,  Peru is a high altitude country, so we had to deal with the possibility of altitude sickness.  One of the main draws we had was hiking Canyon del Colca and the Inca trail leading to Machu Picchu.   The towns on top of Canyon de Colca are at 3700 meters and Machu Picchu is about 2450 meters.

Second, traveling to any country there was the water and food. In previous trips, I have had digestive issues and I did not want to experience that again.  Eating something bad can ruin your trip, leaving you in the bathroom, rather than on the hiking trails.  Also, more frequently, there are minor stomach upsets.  So I was looking for herbs for traveler’s revenge and then how to recover as not to ruin the trip.

Third, is mosquito bites.  In addition to being an Alpine landscape, Peru also has a very humid rainforests with many mosquitos and their mosquito bites.   Getting bitten up and being annoyed by the bites can really ruin a trip.  I was hoping that there would be herbs to help reduce the itching and scratching.

And finally, we were busy grad students and worried about getting sick while taking a big trip.  The stress from school may have already made our immune system somewhat compromised.  Running right from school to our vacation, we had the risk of getting a cold on the plane.  That would ruin our trip and be a big pain when we came back.

So I set to work to find the Chinese herbal natural remedies for digestive problems, altitude sickness,   itchy mosquito bites, and preventing colds on the airplane.  And I found natural remedies to create a travel kit that every trekker should take with them.

Come back to see the following post to learn about Chinese herbs for these common traveling issues.   I will write about it in the next post.
