Rita and I both decided that we wanted to study hypnosis so we could improve our lives and overcome some bad habits we had acquired over the years. So, now we’re both certified hypnotists. We have used hypnosis to help ourselves in several ways. I particularly wanted it to help me lose some weight because I just didn’t seem able to keep myself focused on my weight loss attempts. The hypnosis worked really well. I actually found myself fully focused and lost 60 pounds in what seemed a mostly effortless way. Several months later, I chose to go back to my bad habits, and again was floundering, trying to stick to a routine, and I just couldn’t seem to get back on track. I said to Rita, “Why can’t I get back to where I was? I don’t understand what was different then and now? How could I be so determined and focused then with such great success and so wishy washy this time?” Rita reminded me that I had used hypnosis back then. You know, it never even occurred to me that the hypnosis had such a huge effect on me. But she was right! That’s the difference. It’s the mindset. I have reverted back to the old mindset from my old life. I have been thinking stupid, harmful things like “I need to diet to lose weight.” “If I just go on the perfect diet, I’ll be able to lose weight with no effort.” And ironically, at the same time, I’m telling myself “Dieting is deprivation.” “I hate to be deprived.” “If I’m deprived, then I will end up eating more and gaining weight, so it’s best not to deprive myself of anything.” This is what some people call “stinking thinking.” It’s thinking in a way that doesn’t work to help you meet your goals. And we do it all the time. We keep negative and harmful thoughts playing in our heads constantly. What’s the cure for “stinking thinking”? Change your mind. Think a new thought. Easy, right? Wrong! But hypnosis makes it oh so much easier.
So, what is hypnosis? It is a trance-like state in which you become extremely suggestible, relaxed, and in a heightened state of imagination. Some people mistakenly get the idea that it’s like being put to sleep, but that’s not true because you’re awake and alert the whole time. If the doorbell or the phone rings, and you need to get up and answer it, then you certainly can do that. If you’ve left something on the stove that starts to burn, you’ll be able to smell it and go take care of it. So, instead of being asleep, it’s more like you’re daydreaming, or totally engrossed in a book or movie. You might have all kinds of noise going on around you, or even someone asking you a question, but you only “snap to” after the noise gets louder or the person raises his or her voice to get your attention. When you’re under hypnosis, you are fully conscious, but you tune out most of the stimuli around you. You focus intently on the subject at hand, to the near exclusion of any other thought. And that’s how a hypnotist is able to help you change your mind and start thinking in ways that help you meet your goal, whether that is to be more receptive to allowing wealth into your life or whether you’re trying to lose weight or quit smoking.
In conventional hypnosis, you approach the suggestions of the hypnotist, or your own ideas if you are doing self-hypnosis, as if they were reality. All the statements made to you while you’re under hypnosis will be statements of affirmation, such as “I enjoy exercise.” You will be aware the entire time, that it’s all imaginary. Essentially, you’re “playing pretend” on an intense level, as kids do. But once your mind has believed in the statement and accepted it as reality, when you are no longer under hypnosis, you’ll still believe it, and all of a sudden you’re going for a walk and enjoying it. The more you expose yourself to the hypnotic suggestions, the easier it is to keep yourself pretending and believing. If you get away from the suggestions for a good amount of time and allow yourself to stop believing and are no longer willing to “play pretend,” you will go back to your original “stinking thinking”: “I hate exercise.” And you stop exercising altogether and find it very hard to get motivated to do it again. What to do? Pull out the hypnosis recording and listen to it again. It’s just that easy.
You may have seen stage hypnotists get volunteers to do crazy and embarrassing things while under hypnosis, such as clucking like a chicken every time a bell rings. The human mind really is that suggestible. But, and this is really important to understand, you can’t be made to cluck like a chicken if you don’t want to cooperate with the stage hypnotist and go along and “play pretend” with him. No one can suggest anything to you and have you believe it if you don’t want to. This is why hypnosis doesn’t work for everyone under all circumstances. If you don’t want to go along with it, you won’t. But it’s also why hypnosis is so amazingly effective if you do want to. So, if you want to quit smoking, really and truly, and seek hypnosis as a way to achieve that goal, you will find quitting smoking much easier. But if you don’t really and truly want to quit smoking, then a hypnotist can offer you all the suggestions in the world to help you, and it will not do one bit of good. So, never worry about being given a suggestion that goes against your morals or values or basic beliefs. If you don’t want to “play pretend” and accept it, you can’t. But if you’re given a suggestion that goes against that “stinking thinking” you’ve had playing in your head for weeks, months, years, or your whole life, and you want to change your thoughts to the ones you’re given under hypnosis, ones that will help you reach your goals, you will. You’re totally in control of the outcome of hypnosis. There is nothing magical or mystical that a hypnotist can do to you to “make” you do anything.
Rita and I are developing some basic hypnosis scripts to help people change their “stinking thinking” to thoughts that will help you in reaching goals you want to reach. Rita has finished one that will help with your ability to think and act in a certain way to allow wealth and prosperity to come into your life. I am polishing one for help with weight loss. My husband JIm, who has the most beautiful, professional, relaxing voice in the world, has agreed to record these scripts for us, so we can make these hypnosis CDs available to you. In time, we will offer other hypnosis CDs for other areas, and we will make those available to you also. And if you ever want help with something specific that we don’t have a general CD available for, we can even create CDs that will be custom designed just for you. Rita and I became certified hypnotists in order to help ourselves, but it’s a joy to also be able to help you. Be on the lookout for the availability of these hypnosis CDs very soon. We can help you change your “stinking thinking” to make you a brand new person. Because as the mind thinks, so are you. You can truly change your life with hypnosis. And we’re delighted to help you do it.
