Celebrate Cheese on National Cheese Lovers’ Day

Posted Jan 20 2011 8:48pm

Today is a day which speaks to my heart. I couldn’t imagine a day without it. Welcome to National Cheese Lovers’ Day!

Cheese has so much going for it. It is a good source of calcium and protein. It is satisfying and versatile. Sure, there is that fat thing, but you can easily enjoy the flavor with lowfat varieties and with the full-fat versions in moderation.

We eat cheese daily. I am a connoisseur of cheddar cheese. Carr Valley produced in Wisconsin is one of my personal favorites. Cheese is the epitome of comfort food for me. I used to work with a girl who disliked cheese. I thought that she must be from a different planet. How could anyone not like cheese? Well, she was a bit odd, so I guess it went with the territory.

Cheese is one of those foods which can make an appearance in any course, in any capacity. Not many foods can claim such a honor. We recently had the great fortune of discovering a new cheese when we ordered an artisan platter when dining out. We never had Cotswold cheese before. The first thing that strikes you is its creamy texture. It has a wonderful mouth feel.

The cheese is a treat for those who like onions or chives. The flavors burst with the first bite. It is the texture and taste which give it its unique properties. Our first experience with it was divine. We’ll pick up a wedge when we want a special treat.

So, here is my challenge to you. Skip the grocery store brands just this once and treat yourself to pure heaven. Go to the gourmet cheese section in your grocery store and try something new. Travel to Switzerland with a good Gruyere. Experience Scandinavia  with a Jarlsberg. Explore the marvelous world of cheese!
