At Risk For Heart Disease

Posted Nov 11 2008 3:50pm

It’s not easy knowing that you’re at risk for heart disease.  My dad died of it.  My mother struggled with high blood pressure before her death.  It runs in my family.

News that a blood test may identify patients who would benefit from statins is good news.  Statins are drugs that improve blood cholesterol levels.  Diet isn’t just about looking good.  It’s about protecting your heart.  Knowing and controlling your cholesterol are key to a healthy lifestyle.

My husband also found this out the hard way.  He will be on statins for the rest of his life.  For my part, I prepare good meals and try to watch the “bad” fats in the foods that I prepare.  I encourage us both to exercise, both of which can help lower cholesterol.

The news of this blood test and the benefits to women are encouraging.  With so much bad news about obesity and increased incidents of diabetes, it’s good to know that one can take control back and get back on the road to wellness.
