Arthritis Herbs - White Willow Bark - Not Suitable For Everyone!

Posted Aug 21 2009 12:39pm

White Willow Bark (Salix alba) is a tree native to Asia and Europe and its name comes from its leaves that are covered in fine hairs. This herb has been used for centuries for pain relief and many favour it as one of the great arthritis herbs and there is much scientific evidence to back this up.

However there are safety issues to be considered and because this herb contains salicylates, you should take the same precautions as you would with aspirin, until research indicates otherwise.
Consequently, the following people should not take willow bark:

People with asthma, gout and hyperuricemia. Those with kidney disease or peptic ulcers.

People who are sensitive to aspirin or have an allergy, as there is a risk of anaphylaxis.

You should not combine white willow with garlic, ginkgo or vitamin E as this can increase the risk of bleeding.

If you are nursing a baby or if you are pregnant.

If you are having surgery, you should not take white willow bark for two week before or after.

Children and teenagers who have Reye’s syndrome, chicken pox or flu like symptoms.

You should always talk to your doctor before taking arthritis herbs.
