When it comes to an arthritis diet, not all fats are equal. Here are a few tips regarding both supplements and diet that are useful to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. An excellent supplement for osteoarthritis is 500 mg of glucosamine sulphate taken three times daily. It reduces inflammation, relieves pain and helps to stimulate regeneration of cartilage. It's wise to avoid saturated animal fats, partially hydrogenated oils and hydrogenated polyunsaturated fats in your diet. The best oils to alleviate inflammation are omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in cold water fish such as sardines, herring and salmon and also in flaxseeds and walnuts. Extra virgin olive oil should be used as you primary source of fat. Turmeric and ginger help reduce the inflamation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and I find it very easy to include these in my cooking, as they add a wonderful flavour as well as being health giving for those on an arthritis diet. The most important thing for people with rheumatoid arthritis is to try and eliminate food allergens, such as dairy, beef, corn and wheat products from their diet and avoid foods from the nightshade family, which include aubergine, potato and tomato. |
