Are You Addicted to Coca Cola?

Posted Mar 04 2010 2:32am

Many people have asked that question. If it was back in 1885 or the early 1900’s and you were drinking the original recipe of Coca Cola invented by John Pemberton you could probably be addicted to it due to the use of cocaine in that recipe. Today, you are more likely to be addicted to one or more of the ingredients used in its recipe.

Cocaine is No Longer Used in the Coca Cola Recipe

The original recipe contained 5 ounces of cocaine per gallon of syrup.  Due to FDA regulations and requirements the recipe has been changed throughout the years.  The use of cocaine in coca cola was stopped completely in 1929. The current Coca Cola manufactured today does not have any cocaine in it.

Ingredients that Cause You to Think You are Addicted to Coca Cola

Coca Cola does contain ingredients that can be associated with addiction such as caffeine and sugar.   A moderate intake of caffeine is 200 – 300 mg per day. Withdrawal from these additives does not produce symptoms as severe as a withdrawal from drugs or alcohol.

Withdrawal from Caffeine and Sugar can cause some mild symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, nervousness, anxiety and irritability. Cravings for caffeine and sugar are common.  You may think you are addicted to coca cola when you stop the drink and experience these symptoms.

Due to the stimulant properties in both of these ingredients you can experience changes in mood and fatigue when they are withdrawn.  The severity of the symptoms can vary and based on the amount of these substances you consume can be range from mild to severe.  If you consume large amounts you might want to slowly taper down.  These symptoms usually stop after a few days to a few weeks.

Are You Addicted to Coca Cola or the Ingredients?

It is more likely that you are not addicted to coca cola and experiencing withdrawal symptoms from stopping the beverage as a whole, but that you have stopped receiving massive amounts of sugar and caffeine by not consuming the drink.

When you think you are addicted to coca cola, try replacing the amounts of sugar and caffeine you would normally get from drinking coca cola with other beverages if you begin to experience symptoms.  You might find that your symptoms are relieved and it is not coca cola, the product that you are addicted to, but a few of the ingredients that make up the formula.
