Hi Savings,
Aromatherapy is my area of interest and experience in natural medicine. There are many essential oils that are helpful for overcoming asthma. The biggest challenge in using aromatherapy for asthmatics is that many people are afraid the smell may trigger a reaction. A very common cause of asthma is synthetic fragranced body and home deodorizing products. It is very important to understand that not all essential oils are created equal.
Only pure therapeutic grade essential oils that do not contain any chemical additives or synthetic fragrances will provide healing benefits. I have used Young Living Essential Oils for almost 10 years. Highly recommend their Eucalyptus Blue from Ecuador for relaxing respiration muscles and promoting normal breathing and Ningxia Red antioxidant juice to soothe inflammation. You can order from my website and please feel contact me for more information.
Be well, Jen
A quick rundown for a complex illness:
Cleanup your diet and your lifestyle if it is not already clean. Make sure your diet has fresh fruits, vegetables, and grain products. They have benefits beyond vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids. They contain an array of phytonutrients, substances that can influence asthma. One interesting aspect of these phytonutrients is related to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung disorders. There is anevidence that substances in foods can modulate inflammatory lung respiratory conditions
Vitamin C in large doses up to 4 - 5 g a day acts to stabilize the cells that get inflamed in asthma. Magnesium balance is critical since magnesium relaxes the smooth muscles in the lungs many people are low in magnesium - found in green leafy veggies. You can take magnesium up to 800 mg daily.
Fish oils also help in does of 1-3 g of salmon oil per day to reduce infalmmation.Take Vitamin E 400 IU with these.
Clean up your envronment if you know the triggers for asthma - dust, pollens, air pollution etc. can all make things worse. Even perfumes natural or otherwsie can trigger attacks.
Reduce or manage stress better - use breathing and relaxation techniques.Go to my website at http://www.arfe.ca for help with this.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can really help. They are effective in both acute situations (asthma attacks) and for prevention. Your acupuncturist can diagnose the underlying problems that are causing the asthma (usually, either lung function is weak, or there is too much phlegm or tension restricting the breathing) and help correct the causes as well as the symptoms.
Depending on the severity of the asthma, some people are able to control it with just acupuncture and herbs, without the side effects and health risks of pharmaceutical medicines. Other people are able to reduce their medication use, and better control their asthma, by using both Western and Chinese medicine together.
Good luck, and let us know how you do!
Marilyn
