Acupuncture For Treatment Of Nausea

Posted May 02 2011 3:09pm

Acupuncture can treat nausea in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, according to a study from the Karolinska Institute and Linköping University in Sweden. Patients who received only standard care, including medication for nausea, felt significantly more nausea than patients receiving acupuncture.
The acupuncture treatment was given two or three times a week during the whole period of radiotherapy, which is a common schedule. Patients believed the treatment was effective in reducing nausea.
Acupuncture, which derives from traditional Chinese medicine, has been practiced for thousands of years, and is used to relieve pain, treat infertility, and a host of other medical conditions. Acupuncture is increasingly being used in cancer care as an alternative to drugs to treat therapy side effects such as nausea and pain.
Various conventional medicines have been utilized to reduce the amount of nausea experienced by patients undergoing chemotherapy. Despite the range of medications, many people still feel sick. People undergoing chemotherapy often find that acupuncture can reduce nausea.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the peripheral circulation and activating nerves that prompt the release of important substances from the brain such as endorphins.
