What Faith Can Do In Our Lives, Especially When Ill

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes, its leaves are always green it has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:7, 8)
A good friend called this morning and shared this verse with me. She knows that not only am I facing a lengthy recovery following surgery last week, but that there are other things going on that are trying hard to shake my confidence. She reminded me that while right now the heat has come–and in fact it feels as if a hurricane has come into my life–I have nothing to fear.
My roots are deeply grounded in the Lord and he is the one I trust. While I cannot see the good in anything that is happening God sees the big picture and all I can do is trust him and wait while He works. If I take and place my confidence in someone or something else then the outcome will not be good, but if I keep my faith, my hope, my trust and my confidence in the Lord miracles will happen. This is what faith can do.
I know that God is at work and that someday I will look back at this time in my life and see what God has done. I have made a conscious decision to focus on the positive, not to dwell on the negative and to trust in God alone.
Part of the lyrics of the song “That’s What Faith Can Do” have been going through my head for the last several days (see video below).
I want my faith, my roots to be so grounded in him that when the days and sometimes weeks or months where situations beyond our control come into our lives that no matter what my confidence cannot be shaken. We know that while we may not feel like anything good could possibly come from the situation God can and will use it to “bear fruit.”
Someone is watching how we handle things, the people involved are watching us, and if we keep our roots deep something good will come. We may never see the good thing that has happened while here on earth but one day we will. These times of testing and trials are when we have to be diligent and take the time to water our “roots” and to stay close to God.
While I know that there are going to be some bumps along the way for the next few weeks I also know that God is at work and that I am going to see miracles happen and some of my silent prayers get answered.
Prayer: Thank You, God, for friends who bless us with their love and prayers. Thank you that you know the silent prayers and concerns of our heart the things we cannot share with others, but You know what they are and You provide the peace and comfort that we need to face each day. Lord, help me keep my roots deep in You where they grow and become strong and then are able to reach out to others who are struggling. Amen.
