what could be some causes of sharp burning pains in the legs and feet

I just found out that P.A.D (Peripheral Arterial Disease) is one of main causes of this kind of pain. My left leg(calf) and foot started hurting so bad that I  finanally had to go to the emergency room. My doctor told me that I had blockage in my artery and needed surgery. He also said that between 12 and 20 million americans suffered from P.A.D and could lead to a heart attack or stroke
