What are the symptoms for a torn and sprained collateral ligament in your pinky finger?

I have had a moderate amount of pain since about Christmas. It sort of feels like I punched a wall and the corner landed between my pinky and ring finger knuckles. I know that is the collateral ligament and was curious if it was just a sprain or if surgery is necessary. Thanks.
