Riches And Power–As God Sees It, Or As The World Does?

Posted Oct 08 2012 10:00am

“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:8-9a)

As Paul begins his letter to the Ephesians, he prays the above, among other things for the believers in Ephesus.

I found myself considering how the world often values riches and power, and how it seems success must be defined by these things.
The continual striving for something better, in hope that more and more success will be forthcoming. How different were Paul’s prayers for the Ephesians!

For many years I worked alongside people striving to climb the corporate ladder–to get to that high position they wanted so much. I had once had thoughts of that too, but as I struggled more with my health and the limitations it brought, I seemed to be doing the opposite. I was working hard just to maintain the position I’d reached and no one seemed to understand why I didn’t want to take on more responsibility, or have more people reporting to me.

Recently, I’ve been looking like I may not work at all for much longer. It seems so long ago, that I thought I needed to keep on achieving–more money, more power.

Maybe my circumstances have caused me to look at life differently to some others. So much of my efforts these days, feel like they are about just surviving another day with pain–like I have no other goal.

I may not be seeking to acquire riches and power as the world sees it, but I can still strive to acquire riches and power–as God sees it. I believe that means the things that are important to God, with a lasting value in eternity. Those words of encouragement or comfort, or prayer that will make a lasting difference in someone’s life, or maybe just in my own life.

This verse also reminds me that God gives me His riches and His power, because I’m living in relationship with Him and that is worth so much more than anything I could ever do on my own.

Prayer: Thank You Father for all that You give to me. Help me never to take that for granted and help me to be motivated by what matters to You, and what lasts for eternity. Amen.
