“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
I’ve been feeling like my life is such a mess lately and it seems like everything I try to do is too hard, or too big for me to even become motivated to start. I’m becoming more aware of the things I can’t do and all the things that I wish were different in my life.
Thinking like that, it’s hard to feel that there’s still reason for me to be here and that there is value in my life. And while I know that God sees value, even if I don’t, it’s often hard to remember that.
One night recently, I was feeling really depressed and just so sick of my life seeming such a mess. Yet again, I was hating the fact that I don’t seem able to get past all the negatives and focus on more positive, uplifting, thoughts.
As I lay in bed, unable to sleep and yet so tired, I heard God remind me that “God doesn’t make junk.”
I do know that God sees value in me and that He’s created me to be the way I am, for a reason–but just then, I hadn’t been seeing much reason or purpose in my life at all. It was one of those “God things” when God’s words came just at the right time and were a powerful wake-up call.
It says in Psalm 139, we are created by God, planned before we even enter our Mother’s womb. Nothing we do, or feel is hidden from God–so He knew just how I was feeling that night. What I needed right then was to be reminded that God knows what He’s doing. He doesn’t make junk. If ever we need reminding of how much design went into our creation, we only need to read Psalm 139, ironically, a Psalm I love.
God brought two other things to mind at that same time.
A recent sermon at our church was based on the thought: “Living as we can, not as we can’t” and how that would change what we do.
Then a quote from a journal recently:
If you look at what you do not have in life, you don’t have anything.
If you look at what you have in life, you have everything.
God doesn’t make junk–so I need to be living as if my life is not junk. There are problems I face, but I have also been incredibly blessed.
Prayer: Father, help me to be aware of how valuable I am in Your sight. May the positive gifts in my life, far outweigh the setbacks and challenges, as I walk close to You. Amen.
