How long will the arm pain from a central spinal cord injury last? Is there another medication besides lyrica that may help?

My husband has suffered a central spinal cord injury.  He is presently in the hospital and is experiencing severe pain in his arms.  I completely trust the knowledge of his doctor,  I was just wondering what else is out there.
