Devotion: Lessons From A Stray Kitten

kitten Devotion: Lessons From A Stray Kitten “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)

Stray cats always appear on our doorstep. Most of the time, they are adult cats that disappear after we feed them. Recently, however, Norman discovered a tiny kitten at the edge of our driveway. He was utterly helpless. He limped and trembled as he followed Norman around the yard.

My daughter and I watched while Norman and our son, Josh, fed the kitten and made a shelter. We cared for the kitten for three days. When no one came to claim him, we called the rescue shelter.

During those three days, Josh became really attached to the little kitten and named him Knoxville. Because our daughter has allergies we can never own a pet cat. Josh told me that the time he was able to spend with the cat felt “precious,” almost like a treasure.

“Mom,” he said, “having Knoxville around just reminded me of God’s Word. You know? His promise, in Matthew, to take care of us is true.”

“Think about it,” he continued. “We didn’t have to go out to get anything for Knoxville. Everything was here. It was like God reminding me that He does the same for me, even when I don’t realize it.”

Josh was right. We had everything that Knoxville needed, when he showed up at our door. The experience with the cat blessed my son. My son’s insight blessed me.

The times we live in are filled with troubling uncertainties. If we add the complexities of chronic illness, our days could become loaded with anxiety and dread.

When I trust God, all I need is found in Him. He becomes my help, and the source of my strength. The pain, limitations, and fatigue are manageable because He shoulders these burdens with me.

The weariness that comes from getting through another day of chronic pain turns into an opportunity for me to share God’s presence in my life. Peace replaces stress as I trust God to use my struggles for His glory. Even in the midst of trying circumstances, God provides moments of joy to encourage me and keep my hope from dying.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us not to worry as You teach us to trust You with our lives.
