Devotion – I Want to Be a Part of What God is Doing

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:19-22)
Have you ever sat and played with blocks with a little child? You can build up towers and buildings for them, and they delight in knocking them down. Sometimes, they only have to take away one block and everything tumbles to the floor.
I recently heard an illustration I cannot forget. Using the idea that it takes all of the bricks in a wall to make it solid and strong, it was suggested that we think of ourselves as one of those bricks. If we are there, in the wall, we are doing our part to build that wall and hold it all together. If we are not there, we might just be the brick that causes the whole wall to collapse.
What a sobering thought.
I know that for myself, I sometimes feel useless simply because I can’t do “my part” anymore. This illustration helped me to realize that my part might just be showing up!
I need to participate in some manner in the building up of that wall. No, it’s not the same as it was before. I rarely make it to church. I can’t sing in the choir. I don’t go to “in real life” Bible studies. But I have found a new life, new friends, and a new communities online.
It took me a while to realize I don’t have to try to go it alone. Yes, things are different now, and it took me a while to figure out how to navigate the changes. But God opens doors for us.
I, for one, want to be a part of that wall – the one that builds up the temple of God.
How about you?
Are you trying to go it alone? Or are you doing your part of holding that wall of community strong – just by showing up?
