Controversy Surrounding Epidural Injections

Posted May 07 2013 6:23pm

Injection

It’s no surprise that there are differing opinions on steroid injections. Some folks swear by them, while others swear at them. TV personality Dr. Oz recently tackled the issue. He talked about it on The Dr. Oz Show, but also posted an article online. I’ll share some of it here with you, but I would encourage you to read it in its entirety for yourself HERE .

The most jaw-dropping fact from the article?

The steroids used in epidural steroid injections are FDA-approved for your muscles and joints, but the FDA has never approved the injections for spinal use. Doctors are allowed to use drugs for other purposes than those they were originally approved for this is called “off-label use” – but that means that use never underwent an official study to make sure it’s safe and effective.

Yes, you read that correctly. Those injections that you’ve had, or are contemplating getting, are not FDA-approved for spinal use. Nervous yet? You should be.

I’ve posted my thoughts about this topic on  (come on, go “Like” my page) and Twitter (you KNOW you want to follow me there), but let me reiterate them here. It’s of the UTMOST importance that, regardless of where your pain is, you treat the CAUSE rather than the EFFECT. If you simply chase the symptom, you’ll always be chasing the symptom.

Think about it this way: If your tire on your car goes bald, you aren’t just going to get a new tire. You’ll address the alignment issue that caused the tire to go bald. When it comes to back pain, steroid injections are the equivalent of simply changing the tire. You’re ignoring the cause of your back pain, and simply going after the effect.

QUESTION: What are your thoughts on spinal epidurals?
